Let’s play ball! Learn more about the history of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and its ties to Illinois. As famously quoted by Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own, “There’s no crying in baseball!” Founded by Philip K. Wrigley, the AAGPBL formed fifteen baseball teams throughout the upper Midwest between 1943-1954. In 1948, Springfield, Illinois was added to the League. As a result, the team became known as the Springfield Sallies and played at Fitzpatrick Memorial Stadium in Springfield, IL for one season.
