He and his wife, Leila Avery Rothenburger (1884-1942) went on a world tour of missions from June through December 1924. They met with Mahatma Gandhi in India. The congregation hosted a going away picnic and a homecoming service. He was a leader in the Disciples of Christ organization and the president of the Springfield Ministerial Association. He had three daughters, Ruth, Ada Jane, and Wilma. The Rothenburgers knew Dr. Vachel, Catherine, N. Vachel, and Elizabeth Lindsay through the First Christian Church.
