Sangamon County Medical Society Alliance Collection

The collection includes Sangamon County Medical Society Auxiliary/Alliance scrapbooks, cassette tapes of programs, newsletters of the Sangamon County Medical Society Auxiliary and the Illinois State Medical Society Auxiliary, and presidents’ yearly binders and folders containing yearbooks, brochures, meeting minutes, news articles, financial reports, membership lists, and projects.

The Women’s Auxiliary to the Sangamon County Medical Society formed in 1929 and had their first meeting on February 14, 1930. Their motto was “Let the helping hands of the doctor’s wife reflect and enrich his dedicated service.”  The organization lead health related projects in the community including with children, teens, students, and the elderly. They worked with addressing domestic violence, mental health, AIDS, health careers, community health needs assessment and more.  The name changed to the Sangamon County Medical Society Auxiliary and then the Sangamon County Medical Society Alliance. They continued to be a non-profit assisting the Sangamon County Medical Society and comprised of spouses of physicians who were members or qualified as members of the Sangamon County Medical Society. The organization was part of the Illinois State Medical Society Auxiliary/Alliance and the American Medical Association Alliance. The Sangamon County Medical Society Alliance dissolved in April 2017.
